This week, we are starting our month-long project, design systems. We are asked to design three deliverables for a hypothetical symposium that is taking place at NYU on April 19th.
The title for the symposium is “Invisible Designs”, which highlights the contribution of BIPOC communities in the field of design. I want to respect the title and play around with the word “invisible”. I immediately thought about how “invisible designs” could be read as “in visible designs”, so I decided that I would center the theme of my designs around “invisible”.
For the typeface, I want to do a mix of serif types and san serifs. After going through so many fonts in illustrator, I eventually landed on Roboto for its versatility and readability. However, I could not get creative cloud working and illustrator will not add in my font selection. So before that’s resolved, I am going with my backup, Avenir, which is just as versatile and readable as Roboto.
For the colors, I want to incorporate green and pink to create a refreshing look. Since it’s a design symposium, I figured that the look and feel of the deliverables don’t have to be super corporate. Therefore I am also going to incorporate some modern-vintage elements into the layout and overall style. I found lots of inspirations on Pinterest and I really liked the two-column design used in many posters I found.
For the article spread and web landing page, I looked through some magazines and websites for references.
I found some old magazines and saw this article; I immediately fell in love with how punchy the title looks and how neat the format feels. For my article, I want to adopt this grid system and try to use a two-column layout for a better reading experience.
I want the landing page to look more editorial than corporate, so I stayed away from the “squarespace” look & feel. The website is going to have a minimalist look with the same colors & typefaces as my other deliverables. My hope is to potentially create/find a center piece for the website (and the poster) to use as a visual focal point; this can either be a manipulation of the word “invisible” or a drawing that allude to the theme.
With all the information I have so far, I sketched out some initial thoughts on the grid & layout, but I am sure this will continue to evolve when I start creating all the elements. I am super excited to work on this project, stay tuned!
