For my final project, I decided to explore the topic of body image by creating a pair of glasses that will block the user’s vision if it detects a mirror. My inspiration came from my personal experience and conversations with other friends surrounding body image. Growing up, I never felt confident about my appearance, and now, I realize that it’s not just me that’s having that internal conflict. Is it our own perception that is affecting how we view ourselves? …

This week, I focused on adding some details and finalizing my draft from last week according to some of the feedback I have received. It definitely feels odd to conclude the project after weeks of working on it since each week I am always thinking about how I could make things more visually interesting.

Because I have finished the biggest chunk of work last week, I only added in a few things and made little tweaks on details like speed, position, and timing. …

Coming into week three of this assignment, I am definitely feeling some stress and fatigue working with the same material for the past two weeks. So after watching some other kinetic typography work and learning up some tricks and skills on YouTube, I scratched a lot of ideas and decided to start over with some new transitions.

The first thing I did was finishing up adding all the texts. I also fixed some syncing issues and changed some types to provide more consistency. For transitions, I added a camera for one specific scene and tried playing around with different effects…

After putting together some ideas on contents and layouts for my project, I got some valuable feedback on how I should move forward this week. I realized that my storyboard didn’t include some important details like my font choices, transitions, and layout.

So this week, one of the first things I did was to make sure that I have a storyboard that’s detailed enough to serve as a reference when I move on to building the project on After Effects.

For the typefaces, I decided to use Montserrat for Valentina because I think Montserrat medium looks soft and rounded and…

This week marks the start of our motion design project: Type in Motion. We are asked to represent a chosen dialogue, conversation, or speech in only texts and basic shapes. This assignment is to challenge us to think about different ways we can convey emotions through typefaces, shapes, colors, and movements.

I focused on gathering my content and sketching out a storyboard for the video that I will be putting together later on. I thought about some memorable moments on TV and I thought reality TV shows would be the perfect material for this assignment since they are always dramatic…

This week we are making a switch using sewable materials. I decided to make something similar to what I did for the midterm by using pressure as a trigger.

I imagine the switch would be constructed using some foam/cotton stuffed in a pocket. So I put some conductive tape on both sides of the pocket, which will be made by folding the fabric onto itself. Then, I installed the rest of the circuit by sewing some conductive threads and adding a resistor to prevent a short circuit. …

This week marks the end of our 4-week long project Design Systems. For this assignment, we had to design a poster, article spread, and website landing page for a hypothetical symposium taking place at NYU. Since I divided the three different deliverables into three weeks accordingly, I focused on creating the website this week using layout grids.

Before jumping into my website, I knew I needed to wrap up my article spread and posters from the previous weeks with some new feedback I have gotten. Some people pointed out that the pink I have been using throughout my design could…

After settling down some key concepts and sketching out my poster design, I got some great feedback and made some minor tweaks to the poster.

Hearing some feedback from last week’s sketches, I decided to go further with my ideas and come up with more iterations of my initial idea.

I went back to the title again and began to think about other ways I can add more meaning to it. I asked myself, what does it mean to be invisible? As a Chinese immigrant living in the U.S., I can relate to the feeling of invisible in many different ways. To me, being invisible means to be covered, erased, and ignored. …

For our first creative project, we are making a wearable device that deals with data tracking. Because this project is very similar to our low-tech wearable assignment, I decide to extend that idea and see if I can take it to the next level.

A couple of weeks ago, I started sketching when I decided to pursue my idea of collecting and presenting the level of stress as a type of data.

My original idea was to make the device fit on the fingers, and then have it connected to a board attached to a bracelet. …
